Both the differential gear and the manual gearbox are only partially filled with gear oil, the remaining cavity in the gearbox is used to compensate for temperature fluctuations and is open to the outside through ventilation holes. If you drive through a cold ford, for example, with a warm gearbox, the housing and the air inside it cools down quickly. This reduces the air density (as air contracts when it cools down). A vacuum is created and air is sucked in via the gearbox ventilation. If the gearbox ventilation is below the waterline at this moment, dirty water can be sucked in.
